This is practical design on customer site connected to MPLS , devices and link are kept independent for <\/b><b>Redundancy<\/b><b>.\u00a0 Generally 2 WAN Links are used however I tried with Tertiary link too.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Configuration of all PE and Routers are in the snapshot below. Since the study is on HSRP we can Pre-build the network with config and keep it ready.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">PE Configuration:-\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/thechotacode.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/PE_Config.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1599\" height=\"823\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Router Configuration:-\u00a0 Default hold timers 10 seconds both in HSRP v1 &amp; v2, hence used hello 1sec &amp; 3sec hold timer. Also we have to enable preempt, in VRRP its by default enabled however in HSRP we have to configure and for Link stability in Primary we used 5sec delay in Fallback.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/thechotacode.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/R1_R2_R3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1054\" height=\"251\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Tracking Method:-<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<b>It really depends on the design how we got to track the Main link for\u00a0<\/b><b>fail over<\/b><b>. General practice is to track the route which is consistent because other tracking method can create high flapping causing problems to Router functioning.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>1.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0IP<\/strong><strong>\u00a0SLA<\/strong><strong>\u00a0based<\/strong><strong>\u00a0Object<\/strong><strong>\u00a0Tracking<\/strong><\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><b>We practice this\u00a0<\/b><b>scenario<\/b><b>\u00a0when there isn\u2019t routing protocol on WAN interface, and high latency is observed in WAN then we could use multiple logic in IP SLA way of tracking. One of that is sending ICMP packets to certain IP on WAN side and in the event of\u00a0<\/b><b>packet loss<\/b><b>\u00a0there will be track down causing the\u00a0<\/b><b>fail over<\/b><b>. There can various feature on ICMP that can be tracked like latency, jitter etc even the\u00a0<\/b><b>start time<\/b><b>\u00a0and end-times can be set.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>R1(config)#track 1 ip sla 1 reachability<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>R1(config)#ip sla 1<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>R1(config)#icmp-echo 8.8.8.8<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>R1(config)#ip sla schedule 1 life forever start-time now<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <span style=\"color: #800000;\">2.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>\u00a0Route lookup based Object Tracking<\/strong><\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><b>This is ideally way however this requires a routing protocol to be there in WAN link, the routes will go off only when the timers expires for it and restoration also been maintained with timer. hence Flapping\u00a0of Tracks would not be that frequent maintaining the sanity of the Router process.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>R1(config)#track 1 ip route 8.8.8.8 255.255.255.255 reachability<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>3.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0Interface based Object Tracking.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>This will track the line protocol status of the WAN interface connecting Main link. However has the drawback if the link is connected with many intermediate devices then end device link status remains always up even if the intermediate devices goes down.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><b>If the interface flap occurs then that would cause track to flap in high frequency causing the fail-over\u00a0too frequent for the network.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>R1(config)#track 1 interface gigabitEthernet 1\/0 line-protocol<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>R1(config-track)#exit<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;\">4.Directly tracking WAN interface (Serial\/ATM\/POS. In HSRP you get this option.<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>R1(config)#standby 20 track Serial0\/0\u00a0 30\u00a0 &gt;&gt; Decrements the current priority with value of 30<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<pre>    <\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>STATES OF HSRP:-\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>All routers begin in the Initial state. This section discusses the intent of each state. For specific details on the actions taken in each state, please see the state transition table in section 5.7.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">1. Initial :-\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">This is the starting state and indicates that HSRP is not running. This state is entered via a configuration change or when an interface first comes up.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">2. Learn :-\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">The router has not determined the virtual IP address, and not yet seen an authenticated Hello message from the active router. In this state the router is still waiting to hear from the active router.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">3. Listen:-\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">The router knows the virtual IP address, but is neither the active router nor the standby router. It listens for Hello messages from those routers.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">4. Speak:-\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">The router sends periodic Hello messages and is actively participating in the election of the active and\/or standby router. A router cannot enter Speak state unless it has the virtual IP address.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">5. Standby:-\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">The router is a candidate to become the next active router and sends periodic Hello messages. Excluding transient conditions, there MUST be at most one router in the group in Standby state.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">6. Active:-\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">The router is currently forwarding packets that are sent to the group&#8217;s virtual MAC address. The router sends periodic Hello messages. Excluding transient conditions, there MUST be at most one router in Active state in the group.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-adtags-visited=\"true\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">HSRP Message type and their opcode:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><b>Hello <\/b>:-\u00a0 <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Opcode 0<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 <strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">(To indicate that a router is running to become\/already in active or standby state.)<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><b>Coup :-\u00a0 <\/b><strong>Opcode 1<\/strong> <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">(When a router wishes to become the active router having higher hsrp priority)<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><b>Resign:- <\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><strong>Opcode 2<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>(When a router no longer wishes to be the active router.)<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><b>Advertise<\/b>:- <strong>Opcode 3<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong> (When a router want to advertise it own state active\/passive. It will be the initiating packet every time the port is configured or turns up)<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Normal Scenario:-<\/strong><\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><b>We are going to remove all the HSRP config from Routers and configure one by one and how the behaviour <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>will be is explained.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>1. <span style=\"color: #003300;\">When you configure the first interface of HSRP that will go through set of states on each command as we enter in the interface.\u00a0 As you see, just by entering standby IP and timers the state starts from INIT , sets the Group 1 MAC to 0000.0c07.ac01 to 50.0.0.1. LEARN state is when VIP is unknown, however we start with VIP command so no routers will have this state in debug. Then Try to LISTEN for 3 seconds, and timer expires so starts SPEAK with Hello packets out every sec having Priority, VIP, Group etc. Then it makes to state Standby until certain timer if no updates received from any in that group then it will become ACTIVE and start Hello packets every sec with state as ACTIVE.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Logs:- so far we haven&#8217;t configured the priority.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\">R1#config t<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Enter configuration commands, one per line.
